Posterize

Colour

Reduce each channel to a small number of steps.

Posterize quantises colour. Instead of 256 possible values per channel you get the number you ask for, so smooth gradients turn into visible bands.

Same artwork either side, so the difference you see is the effect. Built with the same SVG-filter primitives the product uses, but tuned for legibility at this size — treat it as a faithful illustration of the behaviour rather than a pixel-exact capture of the editor.

When to reach for it#

  • Screen-print and poster looks.
  • Making photographic content sit next to flat vector art.
  • Deliberate cheapness — low levels read as retro digital.

Steps per channel. 2 gives eight possible colours in total and is very graphic. 8 to 16 is subtle enough to read as a print process rather than an effect.
