Long Shadow
Stylize
A flat extruded shadow ray at any angle.
Repeats the silhouette along an angle to make one continuous solid shadow, the flat-design shadow that trails off a shape at 45°.
It is a graphic device, not a lighting simulation — there is no blur and no falloff unless you add fade.
When to reach for it#
- Flat-design icons and titles.
- Retro and material-design treatments.
- Adding direction and depth without photographic realism.
Parameters#
45° is the convention and reads as intentional. Other angles read as arbitrary unless the whole composition agrees.
How far the shadow runs. Long shadows usually want to run off the edge of the layer rather than stopping partway.
A darker version of the background rather than black, or the shape floats.
Fades the shadow along its length. Zero is the pure flat-design look; a little fade softens it toward realism.
