3D Extrude
Give any layer solid depth along an angle.
Stacks many slightly offset copies of the silhouette behind the layer to build a solid side wall, so flat artwork reads as an extruded solid.
It is a 2.5D trick, not real geometry: there is no perspective and no camera. That is a feature at small angles and a limitation at large ones.
When to reach for it#
- Chunky dimensional titles.
- Isometric and flat-3D illustration.
- Adding weight to a logo without modelling it.
Parameters#
How far back the extrusion runs.
Direction the solid recedes. Keep it consistent with any Long Shadow or Drop Shadow in the same composition.
The extruded wall. Darker than the face reads as shadow; a different hue reads as a painted edge.
Darkens the wall progressively with depth, which is what stops a long extrusion looking like a flat parallelogram.
Things that catch people out#
At very large depths the individual slabs can band. Raise the quality if you can see steps, or switch to the 3D workspace for a real extrusion.
