Roughen Edges

Stylize

Chew the edges with fractal noise.

Displaces the layer's edge with fractal noise, so a clean outline becomes torn, eroded or hand-cut.

This works on rendered pixels, not geometry. For a ragged outline that a stroke will follow, use the Wiggle Path modifier instead.

Same artwork either side, so the difference you see is the effect. Built with the same SVG-filter primitives the product uses, but tuned for legibility at this size — treat it as a faithful illustration of the behaviour rather than a pixel-exact capture of the editor.

When to reach for it#

  • Torn paper, worn print, rubber stamps.
  • Grunge and distressed treatments.
  • Organic edges on geometric shapes.

Parameters#

Borderborder#

How far in from the edge the roughening reaches.

Scalescale#

Noise feature size. Small values give a fine fray; large ones give big torn chunks.

Complexitycomplexity#

Octaves of noise. Higher adds fine detail on top of the large shapes.

Evolutionevolution#

Keyframe this for an edge that crawls — the boiling-line look of hand-drawn animation.
