Particles

Simulation

Spawn a particle system from this layer's silhouette.

Unlike everything else in this section, Particles does not modify the layer. Picking it creates a *new* particle layer pre-bound to this layer's silhouette, so particles emit from the shape.

The new layer is full-canvas and tracks the source's live position every frame, so moving or keyframing the source carries the emission with it.

What it creates
sourcesilhouettenew linked layer
The source layer is unchanged. The settings live on the new layer, and it tracks the source's live position every frame — so animating the source carries the simulation with it.

When to reach for it#

  • Sparks, embers, confetti, snow, dust.
  • Making text or a logo disintegrate.
  • Trails that follow an animated object.

Things that catch people out#

It creates a sibling layer

Look in the layer list — the settings live on the new particle layer, not on the source. Deleting the source leaves the particle layer behind.
