Wind

Forces

A steady breeze in one direction, with gusts.

Wind pushes every clone in the same direction, with the strength varying over time. The whole array leans together and recovers together, which is what makes it read as weather rather than as noise.

This is the difference between Wind and Turbulence: Turbulence samples noise at each clone's position, so clones near each other move together and the field swirls. Wind samples noise in time, so everything shares one gust.

When to reach for it#

  • Leaves, confetti, snow, petals, embers.
  • A field of grass or hair strands leaning in a breeze.
  • Any instanced array that should feel like it is outdoors.

Parameters#

Directionangle#

Which way the wind blows, in degrees. 0 is to the right, 90 is downward.

Strengthstrength#

The steady component, in pixels. On its own it just leans everything to one side — the movement comes from Gust.

Gustgust#

How much the wind varies. This is the control that makes it alive. Around the same value as Strength gives a convincing breeze.

Gust speedgustSpeed#

How often gusts arrive, in hertz. Below 0.5 is a slow swell; above 2 is a squall.

Spreadspread#

De-syncs each clone by its index, so the gust travels across the array instead of hitting it as one slab. 0 means everything moves in perfect unison, which looks wrong immediately.

Seedseed#

Changes the gust pattern without changing its character.
